Different forms of Anaesthesia

There are four types of anaesthesia: Conscious sedation, Local Anaesthesia, Regional Anaesthesia and General Anaesthesia. The choice of anaesthetic used depends on the nature of surgery and your general health status. Your anaesthesiologist will determine the best type of anaesthesia for your specific case. You are encouraged to ask your anaesthesiologist any questions you may have regarding the type of anaesthetic planned.

Accounts

Your Account

Please note that your Anaesthetic Fee is a separate account from your hospital and surgeon’s account.

Depending on your choice of Medical Aid or Insurance Plan, your healthcare funder may cover between 30% to 100% of your anaesthesiologist’s fees. This is like any short-term insurance situation where the level of both cover and excess is determined by the individual insurance plan and the premium paid by the insured person. In other words, your agreement with your medical aid is totally separate to the agreement with your anaesthesiologist and surgeon.

The rates charged by most practices are done according to agreement with the major medical aids but may exceed the RPL rate of your medical aid.

You will personally be responsible for payment of your account if there is any shortfall in payment by your medical aid, or where your medical aid fails to pay for whatever reason. You are advised to consult with your medical aid prior to your anaesthetic regarding the level of cover they will provide.

If you require an estimated cost of your procedure beforehand, please contact our office. Any estimate assumes average surgical time and complexity.

Billing Protocol

Accounts are accounted as per the practice billing policies. Please be aware that it might not be in accordance with your Scheme and option. Some practices have payment arrangement contracts with Medical schemes. You are most welcome to contact us before the procedure to enquire if your claim will be settled in full or if there may be a shortfall.

After the scheme paid their part, the patient gets discount on the remainder of the account, valid for 30 days as incentive for timely payment.

After 30 days of the issuing of the invoice to the patient, the discount will be removed.

After 90 days, a final notice will go out to the member for settlement. If the account remains outstanding the amount outstanding will be listed on ITC as Bad debt.
Calcumed is registered with Maris IT to list Bad/unpaid debt on ITC.
